Bagan

Bagan is one of the “must see” destinations for all international tourists visiting Myanmar. Bagan is easy to get to, with flights to Bagan-Nyaung Oo Airport from either Yangon or Mandalay. Tourist boats and normal passenger boats also ply the waters between Mandalay and Bagan via Nyaung Oo. You can also drive to Bagan from Yangon or Mandalay by all-weather highways. Or there’s the option of rail, on Myanma Railways’ Yangon-Bagan tourist train via Pyay and Magway. Accommodation for travellers on all budgets is available at Nyaung Oo, the Bagan Archaeological Zone or in New Bagan.

Around Bagan

Mount Popa

Mount Popa, standing 1,500 metres tall and located just 50 km southeast of Bagan, is an extinct volcano that is the legendary home of the ‘nats’ or spirits. The Mount Popa area is designated as national park and is perfect for eco-tourism.

Sale (Sa-lay)

55 km down the Ayeyarwaddy River south of Bagan you will find exhibits of the antique lacquer wares and wooden reliefs at the U Pone Nya Museum, formerly the Yoke Sone Monastery, along with a large gilded image of the standing Buddha. And if the legendary Tipitaka texts are on your itinerary, you will find them at Tha-tha-na-yaung-chi Kyaung housed in a large red lacquered cabinet.
